This is an interesting and helpful book that contains most of the fundamental information that a third- or fourth-year medical student would be required to know during a surgical clerkship. The book uses the ""Socratic method,"" a question and answer format, that closely resembles the way medical students are evaluated during their surgical rotations. The purpose is to provide concise information that every third- or fourth-year surgical clerk should know. This is a worthy and important objective and the book largely meets it. Because it is targeted specifically to third- and fourth-year medical students, this book would be of little value to any other audience. The authors are credible authorities and have an exact understanding of what their audience wants and needs from this guide. The book contains a small number of black-and-white line drawings, all of which are of good quality. However, I thought that the book is somewhat underillustrated. The index is very helpful and complete. The main feature of this guide is the format, which is conducive to the recall of basic surgical facts. This book will be very useful to its intended audience. It brings together, in a concise manner, most of the information that every third- or-fourth year surgical clerk should know and is presented in a format that closely resembles the way they will be evaluated during their surgical rotations.
